The recent realease of both Movable Type 4.1 with the Professional Pack and a stable build of MTOS has been keeping me on my toes and awful busy with work for uiNNOVATIONS. I keep looking forward to a slightly slower period when I'll be able to put some time into some of the plugins I have in mind.

Grammar Teacher started life as a plugin that Elise asked for: she manually goes through every comment on Simply Recipes and cleans it up before publishing, and is hoping for a plugin to automate that. This plugin will do things like change two periods to one, capitalize "i," and cancel the effect of overzealous commenters (think: "!!!?!??!?!!?!?") amongst a few other details. An element I added for myself is that it will do proper title-casing according to the Chicago Manual of Style. This plugin is actually pretty close to being finished, I think. Do many people have interest in such a plugin?

A massive update to Better File Uploader is in order to really take advantage of all that MT4.1 offers. (Could this become version 3.0? Perhaps.) Custom fields to hold all of the information entered while uploading, thumbnailing and Resize on Upload presets are on my list, along with quite a few other ideas. This is a long way off, months and months, for sure, but I'm trying to get ideas together.

I think the asset inserter could use my touch, too. Most obviously, I see a big need to be able to insert multiple assets. Would the Better Asset Inserter be a part of BFU3.0? Maybe, but I have a feeling this is a large project in itself and might be best separated from BFU.

An assets-aware and MT4-compatible version of Icon-o-matic.

I have an idea for a fun plugin. Something rather unrelated to Movable Type and likely quite useless, but something to laugh at that should be easy to implement. I may slap this together after finishing with Grammar Teacher...

So many ideas, so little time! Any feedback you might have is appreciated!

...And I've just realized that I still haven't updated EDSMT with MT4...

When Movable Type 4.0 entered a public beta a few months back, I couldn't wait to get a chance to play with it. I downloaded, I installed. I poked, I prodded, I submitted bug reports. I've watched it mature along with the rest of the ProNet community. Even though I'm pretty familiar with all the changes and new features, I'm still excited to see the beta sticker get peeled off the product!

I was going to rattle off all of the new stuff in MT4 -- and a lot of it is really worth talking about -- but as I try to write this, I realize there's something much more important to talk about.

You see, for the past few months, we've had a little web development business venture going: uiNNOVATIONS. I've had trouble coming up with a site design we liked and trying to figure out what I wanted and needed to say. Last week I decided I finally needed something more than a placeholder page, and so with MT4 and the text and design I had, the site was launched. I enjoyed putting the site together. A lot. A whole lot. I hate to say that version 4.0 renewed my interest in Movable Type because with the business and plugins and sites I've worked on over the past few months, I don't think I've ever been more excited. And yet, somehow, MT4 makes blogging even more exciting.

Blogging is exciting! Last week as I worked so feverishly with MT4 I remembered that. I think sometimes we (that is, MT developers at large) might lose a little of that focus in favor of the excitement that is the APIs, the user interface, and yes, even the documentation. Sure, we need a capable tool to blog with, but in the end the ultimate goal is communication.

When you sit down to write a new entry think about who you're talking to: there are <strike>tens</strike> <strike>hundreds</strike> <strike>thousands</strike> millions of people who want to know what you have to say. Your review may get them to buy that book on Amazon, your photos might inspire them to take a vacation, your story may remind them of their childhood. Your blog might inspire them to blog.

Better yet, maybe you'll introduce somebody to blogs and blogging for the first time. "There are people who want to read what you write." What an ego boost that is!

Movable Type 4.0 makes it easier than ever to give somebody that ego boost. The big, bold "Write Entry" button openly begs to be clicked, and the resulting empty page silently cries until you fill it up.

Movable Type 4.0 makes me want to blog more.

A few days ago I was writing an entry in Movable Type. I was going to schedule it to be published the next day. If you've done this, you know how easy it is to forget to add a leading zero, if necessary. I forget to do that constantly, and finally had enough. I wrote a plugin to help me through that, and do much more with the Entry Date field.

So, here we are with a new plugin: Hot Date. Hot Date provides a clickable calendar to select the day/month/year and drop-down selections to choose the time. Hours are displayed in 12-hour time--with an am/pm selector--rather than 24. Options are present to hide the seconds (who cares?), and to make minutes appear in 5-minute increments (does it matter if you publish at 8:53 or 8:55?). Also, a "refresh" button will update the date and time to current.

Download
Hot_Date.zip
. Hot Date is a free plugin, but a donation will support continued development. Suggested amount: $5.
Commercial Use: a $30 donation is encouraged.

Better File Uploader 2.1 is here! Several new features have been incorporated:

Place a watermark on uploaded images to keep your branding visible. Transparency is supported, and the watermark will be applied to the full-size image only, not the thumbnail image.

Resize images during upload. This is a great feature for teams with editors who are not image-savvy--no more 8 megapixel jpegs when all you really want is an 800 × 600 image.

Added a "URL only" processing option--which returns to you simply a bare URL, good for copying and pasting anywhere.

Added localization support.

Set options at the system level and they will be used as defaults at the blog level.

If you’ve already purchased Better File Uploader you can get version 2.1 by redownloading from the link you received in the purchase e-mail. (Alternatively, refer to the Helpdesk for help.) Or, purchase a copy of BFU2 now!

If you're upgrading to version 2.1, note that the folder/file structure has changed considerably since 2.0. You can simply delete the existing files and upload 2.1--your settings will be retained.

While at the Hackathon a few weeks ago I had an opportunity to interview a few of the people there. Below is an interview with Jesse Gardner of PlasticMind Design and Chad Everett of Everitz Consulting. Jesse might be best known from his work on The Style Archive, and Chad from his MT-Notifier plugin.

I intended to try to make podcasts out of these, but the audio as absolutely horrid. Barely intelligible in many places, in fact! So, I transcribed them.

Dan: Tell us what you did today. Jesse?

Jesse: I don't think I want to! Can I tell you what I was supposed to do today?

Dan: Sure, go for it.

Jesse: I was supposed to be working on some of the default templates for Athena: going through and making sure the HTML was kosher and making sure the CSS is as lean and mean as it ought to be... and hopefully there's still a little bit of time to accomplish that today.

The problem is I've been trying to set up a local install of [Movable Type and a web server] so I can work through it, and needless to say I've been unsuccessful!

Dan: Alright, so we can count on you for nothing!

Jesse: Absolutely. Well, I'm almost finished with an icon for Notifier.

Chad: Woo-hoo!

Jesse: So obviously that's made Chad happy.

Dan: Chad you finished a plugin today?

Chad: Sort of. I have a nagging issue with Notifier. I found a bug with the help of Byrne where if you set a certain value in the plugin, Movable Type will always ignore it. I've had to set that aside because there's nothing I can do about that right now.

Dave had a request for sorting categories. And so I put a plugin together--it's not done yet--but it may work well enough for the time being. It probably could use a little more work, though. Maybe I'll try to do a little more with that in the next hour or so.

Jesse: Show off!

Dan: Right! I know I didn't do anything today. I brought cookies, that was the extent of my progress! Chad, do you have other plugins you're known for?

Chad: I just recently completed the oddly-named MT-SPA plugin, or "Snap! Preview Anywhere."

Jesse: Oh, that wonderful thing! Like MT-Mudbath!?

Chad: No, that's the follow-up!

Jesse: Next will come MT-Massage. It's a whole wellness and well-being holistic healing suite for Movable Type!

Chad: The Snap! Preview Anywhere works when you hover your mouse over a link and it'll show you a little pop-up window. The plugin allows you to easily integrate that to your Movable Type blog.

One of my oldest plugins is MT-SomeDays. In fact Su just showed me a project he's doing that uses it. A calendar with events, I think. He said he probably couldn't have done that otherwise.

Dan: Jesse, you're mostly a design guy, right?

Jesse: Mmm-hmm. Yes. That's why I didn't ask many questions in [the Hackathon war room], I didn't want to be ridiculed.

Dan: I take it then that you bounce around creating a lot of different designs then. Do you get into MT's backend at all?

Jesse: Yeah, believe it or not, I do a lot of work with smaller businesses, which need it. I'm really pragmatic--that's why I always ask for the "best practices" list--because I'm sure if I'd show off any of my work you'd say "you did that!?" So yeah, I set up a lot of stuff on the backend, and that's why I like RightFields, 'cuz I'm all about the user experience.

Dan: I appreciate that point of view, let me tell ya!

Jesse: I think it's easy to overlook that fact, that a lot of the people using the software aren't the same as the people sitting in the Hackathon room, hacking away.

Dan: My point of view isn't even "how advanced are you?" It really comes down to "how hard are you going to make me work to do this?" Adding just one extra step is... dreaded. I hate it!

Jesse: If you can make something easier without limiting functionality, then that's great. RightField's lets me do that. For example, I had a client who had a typical blog, but they had a picture at the top of every post. That was their format. So I used RightFields so they could simply upload it along with Brad's old plugin [MTEmbedImage] to create a thumbnail, so the whole process is automated: They just pick an image to upload, the thumbnail is automatically generated, and they're done. It makes the whole process painless.

Dan: That's definitely an improvement to the user experience! Notifier is much the same way in that regard: if I don't have to go back to a post to see the next comment, that's a great improvement to the user experience. Chad, was that a driving idea when you create Notifier?

Chad: Originally, someone just asked if something like that could be developed... it was ScriptyGoddess. She had a PHP-based "subscribe to comments," and so I just kept hacking features on and trimming it down and making it work a little better. There's a new version on the way, I've just got to put the finishing touches on it. The new version has integrated MT's junk filters and an integrated management tool, so that's at least two new worthwhile features. I just have to get all of the documentation done--that was one of the things on my list for today, and it just didn't make it.

Dan: Thinking about design and all the work that has to go into that, Jesse, the default Movable Type installation is pretty plain and simple. So let's imagine I've just set something up here and I've got that blue set of template pages. I know you can't help me write any content, but those blue pages are driving me nuts. Can you help by recommending what I could do to spruce that up a bit, and maybe differentiate myself?

Jesse: There are two big things you can do. First of all, you can go use Arvind's Style Generator where you can go out and change the colors and columns and stuff like that. It's basic in what it can do, but it's still a good tool.

The other thing you can do is use the Style Catcher plugin--it's a part of later versions of MT, or you can download it. With the Style Catcher you can go out to thestylearchive.com, and their is at least 150 styles out there that you can point the Style Catcher to the URL of any theme--it'll download and install it for you. So that's a good way to jump to a new design.

Chad: And the best part is, it'll backup all of your templates for you before it does that.

Dan: Let's shift gears a bit here. Biggest mistake in the '80s?

Chad: Oh, probably parachute pants.

Dan: Was that an occasional thing, or every day?

Chad: Oh, every day!

Jesse: I think it's a toss-up between the comb-over and Jams. Remember Jams? The shorts with the different crazy patterns and colors.

Chad: We're trying to make up for it now.

Jesse: The square sock ties--those were pretty bad. There were quite a few big mistakes back then. Pretty much all of the music of the '80s. Except the electric guitar solos, those were great. I miss those.

Dan: Alright, before you embarrass yourselves further, I'm going to stop you now. Thanks, guys.

Last week I was in New York City for the Hackathon and Executive Summit. It was a chance to meet some "movers and shakers" in the Movable Type community and see some of the work others had done, especially in the big-business world.

The Hackathon was an informal gathering of ProNet members and Six Aparters; many of the people who write the plugins that everyone uses every day were there. (Byrne has published a list of who accomplished what. Good stuff!) The Executive Summit included several interesting presentations about blog and MT deployment and success stories.

I've put together a new plugin called Wordometer. Wordometer is used within Movable Type's Admin interface, on the Edit Entry page. It will count the number of words in your Entry Body, Extended Entry, Excerpt, and Keywords fields, and the number of tags in your Tags field. The word count will update as you type.

I developed this plugin because sometimes I like to have a lead-in to an article. Typically, I want the lead-in to be short--around 50-75 words. It's easy to judge how many words there are by how much space they take up... until I start to add some HTML: including links and abbreviations with titles can take up quite a bit of space and make it more difficult to judge. The word count eliminates any guessing!

Enjoy Wordometer!
